Richo Korean Cuisine

Driving down Waialae Avenue a few weeks ago I noticed that the once “burnt” black restaurant, Momomo, was gone. Not only was it gone but the building had been repainted white! After doing some searching online I discovered that this location would soon be opening its doors as a Japanese-Korean style restaurant. Being a big fan of similar establishments like Gyu-Kaku, I knew that I would have to check it out once it opened.

Thai Eggplant Chicken

I came home the other night and had no idea what to make for dinner. In the refrigerator I saw a few pieces of chicken and eggplants. Immediately I thought of a sautéed eggplant chicken dish. I stepped outside and grabbed a bunch of Thai basil leaves from our potted plants and whipped up a quick and easy meal.

Yotteko-Ya

There are so many places to go for ramen in Hawaii! In addition there are so many types to choose from like shoyu, shio (salt), tan tan (roasted sesame seed), paitan, kotteri… the list goes on! After eating enough ramen you start to put together your favorite spots, and one of mine is Yotteko-Ya in the McCully Shopping Center.

Hawaii Loa Ridge Trail

One of my favorite things about Hawaii is the excellent hiking opportunities. We don’t have massive peaks or vast distances, but our fair state does have tropical forests, waterfalls, and lots of coastline. My favorite kind of hike is one that reaches a summit. Something about being at the top of a peak and having that awesome view makes the experience that much better.

Yesterday my wife and I, along with a friend, went hiking up one of the most popular trails on Oahu: Hawaii Loa Ridge. A state maintained trail, Hawaii Loa Ridge offers a great workout through open ridgeline, ironwood forests, and misty peaks. The trail begins in a park at the end of Puuikena Drive in the luxury Hawaii Loa Ridge development. To pass through the guard shack at the start of the Hawaii Loa Ridge development, you’ll need at least one person in your group with a Hawaii state ID. Once you’ve passed the guards simply continue on up the road until you’ve reached the trail head parking area.

Mei Sum

A couple of weeks back my wife and I visited Chinatown to walk around the markets and pick up some fresh produce. Whenever I go to Chinatown I like to use it as an excuse to stop by and get some dim sum. Our usual dim sum spot is Mei Sum, which recently changed locations to a newer building on Nu’uanu Avenue. Mei Sum has received numerous awards from local papers due to their good food and service. Here’s just a quick photo post about our most recent visit!

Da Kitchen

I have seen a lot of buzz about this new local style food spot here in Honolulu. A popular place for local grinds on Maui, Da Kitchen’s new location is near the intersection of Isenberg & King Street next to Maple Garden. After seeing a lot of positive reviews on Yelp, I decided to head over there the other night for a weeknight dinner with the wife.

Milano Freezer

After dining with the family the other night we passed on desserts where we had dinner and decided to check out Milano Freezer in the Manoa Marketplace. It was a rainy night, but over recent months I’ve heard some good things about this spot so we decided to go for the chilly treats anyway!

Foster Botanical Garden Video

A quick video my father took while testing his new camera equipment at Foster Botanical Garden. Enjoy the beautiful garden scenes!

Zenshu

Got home last night after a long day and decided to head out for a nice Monday night dinner with the wife. I hopped on Yelp and started looking around for some ideas when suddenly I thought “Zenshu!” I headed over to Zenhu’s website and saw that they have a Monday-Saturday happy hour from 5-7pm that features some tasty looking dishes. We were sold on the happy hour and I grabbed my trusty camera and headed out the door.

Kahala Sushi

Growing up in Hawaii I have been completely spoiled when it comes to sushi. Having dined at places like Sushi Sasabune and Mitch’s (in addition to spots in Japan), my standard for GREAT sushi is quite high. But, living in Hawaii, I am also spoiled with a good selection of “budget” sushi spots like Genki and Kuru Kuru Sushi. These spots aren’t going to give me that decadent and ultra-fresh fish that I crave from Sasabune and Mitch’s, but they offer decent taste, reasonable cost, and speed.

Never have I thought that I’d be going to a Zippy’s to eat sushi, or Japanese cuisine for that matter. Serve me up a plate of chili and fried chicken and that’s my ideal Zippy’s experience! But, after enjoying a performance of “The Sound of Music” at the Diamond Head Theater last night we decided to give Kahala Sushi, Zippy’s in-house Japanese/sushi restaurant, a try.
